Swine Flu and Travel Insurance

Swine flu is one of many possible health problems a person can encounter in life or on a trip.  It does bring to the forefront an awareness of a health problem. In reality, there are always health issues that people face.  With swine flu as with any health condition a person needs to know how to limit the chances of becoming sick or hurt.  There is simply no way to assure that we will not become sick or hurt at anytime, so what to do?

First, know how and where to seek healthcare wherever you are.  It is best not to leave this to last minute as having a plan of action is simply wise.  If in a country where you do not speak the language this can be extremely important.  Maybe find out where there is healthcare that will understand you.  Plan ahead and hope you don't have to put the plan into action.

I have been in the health insurance business almost 30 years.  I am a Managing General Agent. I handle international health insurance plans. These include travel health insurance plans.  These are not trip cancellation plans, these are health insurance plans. A person needs to have both types of plans.  International travel health insurance plans are setup to cover people outside of their home country.  The carriers have customer service people that speak many different languages.  As customer service is worldwide it is 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  If the plan is for a US citizen traveling, I have plans that will cover pre-existing conditions.  If you become sick or injured while traveling this type of health insurance is essential.  It is required in many countries and the plans I have meet the requirements of the European Union and all countries.

If the person traveling is not a US citizen, my plans will cover them outside of their home country.  US healthcare is very expensive and if a person is coming to the US, the definitely need to be sure they have travel health insurance.

Swine flu is one of many things I have seen over the years. What can come out of this is an increased awareness that will lead to better habits when traveling, such as hand washing.  It brings to the public's attention the need for travel cancellation and travel health insurance. We will never be without risk, but we can be better prepared.
